Frequently asked questions

Can the axle widening kit be registered for road use?

Yes. Every kit is delivered with an expert report for individual vehicle approval under § 19 (2) in conjunction with § 21 StVZO, the German road traffic licensing regulations. In Germany you take it to an inspection body (TÜV, DEKRA or similar) and have the widening entered in your vehicle documents. Please check with your inspection body beforehand that they will register the kit. Outside Germany, please check the rules of your country; the report documents the engineering and testing of the kit.

Which vehicles does the kit fit?

The classic Land Rover Defender 90, 110 and 130, and, on request, the Discovery 1 and the Range Rover Classic (1986–1994), with the 24/32-spline halfshafts.

Can I fit the kit myself?

Installation should be carried out by qualified personnel or a specialist workshop. Detailed fitting instructions and a safety sheet are included with every kit.

Does the kit work with a suspension lift?

Yes, that is exactly what the selectable caster correction (2° or 4°) is for. With a 40–60 mm lift the caster stays in the optimum range.

Are any other parts needed for installation?

No. If your Land Rover is in good condition, you do not need any further parts. It is often sensible, though, to renew other running gear parts as part of the conversion. We recommend fitting new CV joints (generally recommended from 150,000 km), new bearings, new swivel ball oil seals and new drive flanges.

Does the rear axle need track widening too?

Yes. For the front and rear axle to run in the same track, the rear axle needs to be widened as well. Either you already have 30 mm wheel spacers on the rear axle, or you can order them from us together with the kit.

Why is there no axle widening kit for the rear axle?

The effort and cost of fitting longer halfshafts would be out of all proportion there. The rear beam axle has no steering geometry at all: track, camber and caster are unaffected when conventional wheel spacers are fitted.

Do you make the axle widening kit for other makes as well?

Not yet. Interested? Then do get in touch.

Which wheels can I fit?

Only wheel offsets approved by Land Rover may be used (20.6–33 mm ET).

Does the steering effort increase with a larger caster angle?

Over-correcting the caster angle increases the self-centering force of the tyres, which gives safer straight-line stability. As a result the steering effort can increase slightly. In our opinion that is not a drawback, quite the opposite: the handling feels safer and more modern.

How does the caster angle relate to a suspension lift?

As standard your Defender has a caster angle of roughly 3°. With a lift the radius arm tilts, and with it the caster changes by 1° for every 15 mm of lift. At around 45 mm of lift the caster is therefore close to 0°.
